Saturday saw the Shire of Manjimup kick off its Centennial celebrations with a family fun day and a formal Australia Day Ceremony coupled with its Centenary launch. An estimated one thousand people turned up enjoy the day in perfect weather and take in the sights of the recently rejuvenated pool grounds. The weekend however belonged to the much anticipated "Back To Fonty's Day" on the Sunday. With the Caravan Park full to overflowing, 2500 people turned out for what was to be a huge day of fun and entertainment for the whole family. The World Champion Axeman David Bolstad led the charge in the chopping arena to the amazement of all present. After a full day of high class chopping, he won the 300mm Underhand Championship in the incredible time of 33 seconds in front of 6 Corporate tents packed with thoroughly contented revellers, a full bar and standing room only in the outer. In the mean time the pool was a hive of activity with many of the day's magical moments rolling out one by one. And by rolling out, I mean literally as the Bathtub Derby hit its straps so didn't the contestants. There was total carnage as the tubs seemed more content to go down than anywhere else. The day belonged to tweedle dee and tweeddle dumb who managed to keep their heads above water for long enough to take out the magnificent Kleen Heat BBQ first prize. Trevor Fontanini, grandson of Archie, led the Bombie competition off with aplomb (or should that be abomb) after which no one was safe from a poolside dousing. With Fly fishing, swimming and an appearance by Captain Cook and two beautiful mermaids rounding out the day, there was great fun for everyone. The indomitable Jon Doust behind the mike kept everyone on their toes and the Belly Dancers looked fantastic swaying in front of a large audience. The award winning "Blue Shaddy" put their stamp on a fantastic day with some sensational music played at the water's edge while the sun set over Fonty's Pool.
